Barla is a 25 year-old Tibetan woman, living in a small，broken house in the remote mountains with her family. In December，2008, Barla delivered a baby girl with the weight less than 4 pounds (1,750 grams). The dream to have a boy was broken for this traditional family. Her mother-in-law and her husband didn’t even look at the new-born baby and the mother.
After delivering, Barla was too weak to feed the baby with the inverted nipples. In order to feed the baby, Barla borrowed money from her neighbor to buy powdered milk, but she didn’t know how to prepare the milk with correct formula. She added too much water with the powder whenever she tried to make her milk, and as a result the baby couldn’t get full and cried the whole day for hunger.

Right after Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) field staff got the news, they visited Barla’s home and educated the family regarding the way they treated the mother and the new-born baby. The field staff taught Barla the knowledge about how to care for the inverted nipples and the importance of breast feeding. The staff also gave a pack of materials for mother and new-born baby which gave them real comfort. The family was so touched about not only being given care and knowledge but also offered subsidies by ADRA China.

In mid-January, ADRA staff and the project assistants had a spot check on the village doctor and found that the field staff are doing well. Most of villagers live in the remote mountainous areas, it takes about 2-3 hours on foot，and the field staff need to go though the rough road and overcome the aftershock before getting to the village. But still they always get there on time and truly complete their duties.

This Maternal and Child health service provides rehabilitation assistance for those small villages in the remote area in Lixian, Sichuan after the earthquake.
